Breaker keeps tripping — what's causing it?

- A GFCI outlet on the same circuit has tripped. Check nearby bathrooms, kitchens, garage, and outdoor outlets for a GFCI with a 'TEST/RESET' button and press RESET.
- The circuit breaker for that outlet tripped. Check your panel for a breaker in the middle position (half-tripped) and reset it by flipping it fully off then on.
- The outlet itself has failed. Outlets wear out over time, especially if they've been heavily used or are old (20+ years). Replacement is straightforward for a licensed electrician.
- A loose wire connection at the outlet or in the junction box. Loose connections cause intermittent failures and can arc — this requires a licensed electrician.

Flickering or dimming lights — what does it mean?

Persistent flickering, flickering that happens randomly with no appliance cycling, or flickering throughout multiple rooms is a more serious signal. Two-prong ungrounded outlets — should you be concerned?
Two-prong outlets were standard before the 1960s. They lack a ground wire, which means electronics plugged into them aren't protected from surges the way they would be on a grounded circuit. Modern electronics and appliances assume a ground is present; running them from ungrounded outlets can shorten their lifespan and provides no fault protection.
The options are replacing with GFCI-protected outlets (which provide shock protection without a ground wire), running a ground wire to those outlets where the wiring allows, or in some cases, rewiring the circuit.
