Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
It's a familiar scenario: you plug in the vacuum, turn on the space heater, or fire up the microwave, and suddenly—click—the lights go out. A tripping circuit breaker can be incredibly frustrating, but it’s important to remember that it's doing exactly what it was designed to do: protecting your home from an electrical fire.
What a circuit breaker actually does
Your electrical panel is filled with switches called circuit breakers. Each one controls the flow of electricity to a specific area or appliance in your home. When a breaker detects that too much current is flowing through the wires—which causes them to heat up and potentially catch fire—it automatically "trips" (shuts off) to break the circuit and stop the flow of electricity.
Overloaded circuit (most common cause)
The most frequent reason a breaker trips is a simple overloaded circuit. This happens when you try to draw more electricity than the circuit is designed to handle. For example, if a 15-amp circuit is supplying power to your TV, lamps, and a computer, and you plug in a high-wattage space heater on the same circuit, the total demand exceeds 15 amps, and the breaker trips.
What to check: Try moving heavy appliances to different circuits. If it still trips, you may need an electrician to add a new dedicated circuit to handle the load.
Short circuit
A short circuit is more serious than an overload. It occurs when a "hot" (live) wire touches a "neutral" wire. This creates a path of least resistance, causing a massive surge of current to flow instantly, which trips the breaker immediately. Short circuits can be caused by damaged wiring, loose connections, or a faulty appliance.
What to check: Unplug the appliance you were using when the breaker tripped. If you reset the breaker and it stays on, the appliance is likely the issue. If it trips immediately without anything plugged in, you have a wiring issue that requires a professional.
Ground fault
A ground fault is a specific type of short circuit where the hot wire touches a ground wire or the grounded metal box. Like a regular short circuit, it causes an instant surge of power and trips the breaker. You are most likely to encounter ground faults in areas with moisture, like kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor outlets.
Worn-out breaker
Circuit breakers are mechanical devices, and over time, they can wear out or become overly sensitive. A breaker that trips constantly under normal loads, or feels loose or spongy when you try to reset it, may simply need to be replaced.
AFCI/GFCI breakers tripping
Modern electrical panels often include Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI) and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI). AFCI breakers detect dangerous electrical arcs (sparking), while GFCI breakers detect imbalances in current that could cause a shock. These breakers are much more sensitive than standard breakers. If an AFCI breaker is tripping, it could be detecting a loose connection somewhere in the wall.
When to call an electrician
You should contact a licensed electrician if:
- The breaker trips immediately after resetting it.
- You notice a burning smell, scorch marks, or warmth around the panel or outlets.
- You frequently have to rely on extension cords because your current circuits are overloaded.
- You have an older panel (like a Federal Pacific or Zinsco) that may not be protecting your home properly. Consider a panel upgrade.
