Why is aluminum wiring a concern?

Aluminum branch-circuit wiring was used in many homes built in the mid-1960s to mid-1970s. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, which can loosen connections over time at outlets, switches, and splices.

Loose connections heat up, and that heat is the real hazard. Aluminum wiring can be made much safer with proper remediation — specialized connectors and corrected terminations — rather than a full rewire, but it should be assessed and corrected by a licensed electrician.

Why do older homes have two-prong (ungrounded) outlets?
